» » Mobility Now: Enterprise Mobility Basics, BYOD Budgets, and Apps in the Field

This week’s enterprise mobility roundup brings a new collection of insight and information. Today, we’re talking Enterprise Mobility 101, what BYOD means for IT budgets in 2016, and how mobile apps are making waves in the field service industry.

Welcome to the new wild west. Anthon Muller, executive head of managed enterprise mobility at Vodacom, provides a thorough rundown on the history of mobility in the enterprise and the challenges IT teams face in a changing industry. At the top of Muller’s list is wrangling security policies as the BYOD movement takes hold. From defining a workable mobile enterprise strategy to the pros and cons of using an MDM tool, you’ll find everything you need to know to get started with enterprise mobility.

A penny saved is a BYOD dollar earned. The people have spoken—and they want mobility. A recent report from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) shows that 61% of organizations plan to make mobility top priority in the coming year and will increase spending on software, services, and devices to get it done. Where’s all that money going? According to ESG, 18% will go to BYOD initiatives, and while that figure is small, the research shows there may be a correlation between a formal BYOD policy and an organization’s spending plans. Approximately 68% of organizations with a formal BYOD policy expect to increase their investments in enterprise mobility in 2015, compared to 52% of those that ban employees from using their own devices. Check out the summary at IT World Canada to see more stats and recommendations on where to go next with your enterprise mobility budget.

Mobile apps are having a field day. The field service industry is embracing mobility in a big way, moving paperwork and other processes to the cloud. This comes as no surprise, considering that mobile app users can complete 1.5 times as much work on a mobile device, with a 40% improvement in operational efficiency year over year. These stats are impossible to ignore, and field technicians are starting to use apps to help them improve processes, simplify communication, and reduce human error. Productivity isn’t the only benefit, though—big data presents new opportunities for field workers to identify trends and perform preventive maintenance, ultimately saving time and more work down the road.
